“Work from home? That doesn’t exist,” so thought our 2021 MT/HDS graduate, Kat Coyle, before she signed up for CanScribe’s Medical Transcription program. Training for a job that allows you to work from home requires a structured schedule and self-motivation. On top of that, starting a career later in life can be daunting and stressful. Kat points out, “while working from home sounds like the perfect job, it requires a whole different set of skills” and that the learning process can be challenging, but ultimately rewarding. Now, Kat is graduated and is happily employed.

After 15 years of retail management, I decided to take a huge risk and go back to school. CanScribe was AMAZING. They worked with me and my schedule, and they consistently checked in to make sure I was OK. The instructors were always an IM away for questions. They always had positive feedback and never made you feel silly for asking questions.
I graduated in 7 months, with merits, and was hired within a week as a Virtual Medical Scribe with AQuity Solutions.
I have absolutely zero regrets and encourage anyone thinking about it to just pull the trigger. Take the plunge. You will be amazed at what you can do.
I am 38 years old and have spent 15 years in retail management. The pandemic impacted me hard as I was on the front line of abuse from customers, preventing my staff from having to deal with it. I was yelled at, hit with shopping carts, and my car was keyed because we had no milk.
In September of 2020, I was diagnosed with extremely severe social anxiety secondary to agoraphobia. I decided then that I needed to start looking for a career change. I saw an ad for CanScribe online and thought “work from home? That doesn’t exist.”
It has been amazing. My family and friends have been extremely supportive. I now have a world of opportunity open to me that I never knew existed before.
While working from home sounds like the perfect job, it requires a whole different set of skills. You need to be organized with time management AND self-motivated. It’s so easy to say “oh, it’s nice out I’m going to sit on deck” meanwhile….you have a deadline quickly approaching.
You also have to explain to your family and friends “just cause I’m at home, doesn’t mean I’m not working.” They have to agree to let you focus from x-time to y-time.
My husband and cats are my number 1 reason for success. Working 40-50 hours a week in retail was hard on our marriage as well as on me physically. We are able to spend more time together now.
My 4-year-old cat, Pixel, was diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes in January. Working from home allows me to monitor her food, activity, and her insulin every day.
Don’t. Give. Up.
It’s hard. 100% it’s hard. And you are going to feel discouraged. You are going to feel frustrated. It gets easier. Take your time. Don’t rush through it. You get out of the course what you put in. The instructors want to see you succeed. Reach out.
There is a CanScribe student Facebook group for just students. It’s amazing, supportive, and encouraging.
My future now looks 100% different than it did 1 year ago. I’m happy, I’m able to work in a job setting that works for me. I am so grateful that I decided to take this step.
Reach out. If you have questions, ask. If you are unsure, ask. We were all new. We were all beginners, and we know how it feels. I guarantee, if you ask a question, NO ONE will make you feel silly for asking it.
Starting a career later in life can come with its challenges, but ultimately whatever change you make is worth your happiness. If starting a career later in life could mean a work-from-home option, that itself requires a new set of skills in time management with an emphasis on being accountable to yourself.
