What is CompTIA A+ training?

What Makes a CompTIA A+ Course Worth Taking

The best CompTIA A+ course aligns its curriculum directly to the official CompTIA exam objectives, covers both Core 1 and Core 2 content, and gives candidates hands-on troubleshooting practice alongside structured instructor support. A course that skips any of these three elements leaves candidates underprepared for the certification exam and for the real-world IT support work that follows. The right program acts as a study plan, not just a video library, and positions graduates to move into entry-level IT roles immediately after earning the credential.

Format and Exam Alignment Matter Most

A CompTIA A+ course that follows CompTIA exam objectives closely gives candidates the clearest path through certification exam preparation. Study materials should map to specific exam domains, and practice exam components should reflect the question formats candidates encounter on test day. Self-paced formats suit candidates who already work full-time, but a structured learning environment with scheduled instructor access reduces the dropout rate that self-study alone produces.

Structured Support vs. Self-Paced Study

Free options like Professor Messer's YouTube series and lower-cost Udemy courses offer broad coverage of CompTIA A+ topics. These work well for disciplined, self-directed learners who already have some IT background. Candidates who want accountability, graded assessments, and a defined timeline benefit more from an online college course built around structured completion milestones. The difference is not content volume; it is whether the learning environment holds candidates to a schedule and gives them a person to contact when they get stuck.

How the CompTIA A+ Course Fits Into a 13-Week Online Program

The CompTIA A+ course at CanScribe Career College runs 13 weeks and delivers full online IT training from course start to graduation. Candidates study from home and access instructors Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students in the Kelowna area also have the option to learn on campus. This timeline gives candidates a concrete completion date rather than the indefinite open-ended schedule that self-paced courses often produce.

Who Developed the Curriculum

CanScribe Career College developed the CompTIA A+ course in conjunction with Total Support Solutions (TSS) and CompTIA. TSS is an IT services company whose input shaped the program's technical content, ensuring the curriculum reflects what employers require from IT support technicians on day one. This employer-informed structure means graduates cover hands-on troubleshooting, software management, networking devices, and computer components in the same sequence that working technicians use them.

Support and Completion

Students access CanScribe staff through email, live chat, and a toll-free phone line for the duration of the program. Instructors grade exams individually rather than using automated scoring, and student services provides regular follow-ups to keep candidates on pace. Graduates receive lifetime support from CanScribe after completing the program, which extends to resume review and job search assistance. For candidates weighing program details, the CanScribe admissions FAQ covers tuition, requirements, and payment options.

CompTIA A+ Core 1 and Core 2 Exam Topics Explained

CompTIA A+ certification requires passing two separate exams: Core 1 (exam code 220-1201) and Core 2 (exam code 220-1202). Core 1 focuses on hardware components, mobile devices, networking fundamentals, virtualization, and cloud computing. Core 2 covers operating system installation, Windows configuration, security basics, software troubleshooting, and operational procedures. Candidates must pass both exams to earn the CompTIA A+ credential. No waiver or substitution exists for either exam.

Core 1 Domain Breakdown

The 220-1201 exam tests hardware troubleshooting at the component level: identifying CPU sockets, RAM types, storage interfaces, and display connectors. Networking fundamentals on Core 1 cover TCP/IP addressing, wireless protocols, and cable types. Candidates also answer questions on mobile device configuration, printer setup, and basic cloud concepts. Hardware troubleshooting questions make up the largest share of Core 1 content, so hands-on practice with physical components produces measurably better results than video study alone.

Core 2 Domain Breakdown

The 220-1202 exam places more weight on operating system installation and Windows management than Core 1 does. Security basics on Core 2 include malware removal procedures, physical security concepts, and data destruction methods. Operational procedures cover documentation practices, change management, and communication skills. CompTIA A+ courses that treat Core 2 as a lighter exam misrepresent the credential. Security and OS content on 220-1202 directly mirrors the daily tasks an IT help desk technician performs.

IT Jobs CompTIA A+ Certification Opens for Graduates

CompTIA A+ certification qualifies graduates for entry-level IT support roles including IT help desk technician, desktop support specialist, field service technician, and technical support specialist. These roles exist across nearly every industry because hardware and software problems occur wherever computers operate. The certification functions as a baseline employer-recognized credential that signals a candidate understands hardware, software, troubleshooting, networking, and security at the technician level.

Employers That Require CompTIA A+

A wide range of companies list CompTIA A+ in their job requirements for technical support positions. Organizations that specifically require or recognize the credential include Best Buy/Geek Squad, Canon, Dell, HP, Nissan, and Ricoh. These companies span consumer electronics retail, printing technology, personal computing, automotive, and office equipment, which illustrates how broadly IT support skills transfer across industries. A career in IT support is not limited to one type of company or sector.

Career Trajectory After IT Support

CompTIA A+ serves as the first rung in a structured IT career path. After working as an IT support technician, many professionals pursue CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, or vendor-specific certifications from Microsoft or Cisco. Each credential extends the technical scope of the previous one and opens access to roles with higher technical responsibility and salary ranges. Graduates who want to explore the full range of IT career opportunities available after CompTIA A+ certification can review job titles and compatible programs by role.

Who Should Enroll in a CompTIA A+ Course

The CompTIA A+ course suits candidates coming from customer-facing roles, administrative work, or general office environments where they have developed comfort with computers but have no formal IT credentials. People who have spent time troubleshooting problems for coworkers, setting up home networks, or helping family members with technical issues have already built the practical intuition the course formalizes. No prior IT certification is required to begin the program.

The program fits candidates who want a defined path into a technical support career without committing to a multi-year degree. A 13-week timeline works for career changers who need to move quickly, recent graduates who want a practical credential employers recognize, and working adults who study evenings or weekends while remaining employed. The CompTIA A+ course is a logical starting point for anyone whose goal is an IT help desk or technical support role within the next few months.

CompTIA A+ is the first IT certification a candidate should earn. It establishes the core knowledge required of any IT role and provides a springboard to entry-level IT jobs. A+ incorporates best practices in hands-on troubleshooting, ensuring candidates have practical computer problem-solving skills. Millions of CompTIA IS/ANSI-accredited exams have been delivered since January 1, 2011.

The program content will introduce the student to computer components, networking devices, software management and deployment, and more. The program will expose and support the student to an understanding and appreciation of IT environments. Consideration and study of time management skills and the importance of being a detail-oriented problem solver will be discussed.

The student will be able to explain the importance of maintaining records. This program will prepare students by educating them on IT problems. The course will also support the student in creating a cover letter, resume writing, and interview skills.
