There is currently a huge demand for CanScribe Medical Transcriptionists/Healthcare Documentation Specialist graduates. With international services hiring and an aging population, there is no end in sight for the continuing need for CanScribe graduates. Employment of MT/HDS’s is projected to grow even faster than the average over the next few years.
Because of CanScribe’s reputation in the MT/HDS industry, 88% of our grads find employment within the first two weeks after graduating. Our grads are in such high demand that we cannot keep up with employer requests from companies such as iMedX, Keizer Solutions, and AQuity, just to name a few.
As per AHDI guidelines, our program is 1 year in length. The program takes approximately 1180 hours to finish and the average completion time is 12 months. Students are recommended to work on the program 22 hours per week to graduate on time.
However, you can work at your own pace and complete the program in a faster timeline. Students who have previous medical experience can often finish much faster. We have had a few students complete the program in 4–5 months, but the average is 9–12 months. After completion of the program, you will become fully qualified to work as a professional Medical Transcriptionist/Healthcare Documentation Specialist.
Students are able to purchase extensions gives them more time in their program. These extensions are available to all students, however; students who receive government or third-party funding may be required to finish the program on the original schedule.
There are over 35 hours of authentic doctor dictated reports for you to transcribe. These include over 1000 reports from a huge cross-section of medical specialties covering all work types. As you progress in your studies and gain further knowledge and skills, the reports increase in difficulty.
The MT/HDS program consists of 3 “PIE” exams. All three exams provide the student with the opportunity to self-assess at specific intervals of the program.
All the exams and tests are open book, so you have full access to the program, reference materials and all of your online resources during the exam.
Each exam consists of two components, a theory portion, and a dictation section.
PIE–1 (Proficiency Improvement Exam)
Theory – 5% of your overall grade
Dictation – 10% of your overall grade
PIE–2 (Proficiency Improvement Exam)
Theory – 10% of your overall grade
Dictation – 15% of your overall grade

Students can take a practicum with an employer of their choosing or they can do the practicum through CanScribe. Many graduates have gained employment immediately out of their local practicum experience. To get their own practicum, they should try asking local hospitals, doctor’s offices, clinics, labs, insurance agencies, etc. The local practicum site will need to provide them with on-the-job training. The student will have someone supervise them and assess their progress. Students can set up their own practicum, however, CanScribe will provide all students with a real-world practicum.
The practicum is considered the student’s first job in a new career and is treated as such. The practicum is 100 hours of unpaid, on-the-job work experience transcribing real patient files. Students are to commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week in order to participate in the practicum.
CanScribe offers four different practicum options:
Practicum assignment is based on PIE 2 results. Any student who achieves over 95% on all reports may qualify for an external practicum. Any student who does not pass PIE 2 is assigned the CanScribe practicum.
