Online learning has become increasingly popular for many reasons, including convenience, flexibility, and cost savings. But how do you ensure you get the most out of these programs?
If you’re looking for some tips to learn quickly, there are several things you can do:
With those first few tips under your belt, check out our five valuable tips to learn quickly in online courses to maximize your success below!
You might read this and scoff at it, but the truth is that mistakes help you learn. In an online class, there’s a good chance that you’ll make many errors along the way. The mistakes you repeatedly make in your course are invaluable in your learning process. Think of these mistakes as ‘learning opportunities’ because they provide you with a chance to practice what you’ve learned.
You’ll likely learn more when you make mistakes than when you follow the correct path. So don’t be afraid to make mistakes, and don’t let them deter you; without them, you wouldn’t be learning.
If you’re taking an online class, write down everything you’re learning as you go through the course. Writing things down (physically with a pen or pencil) helps your brain better remember the information. But don’t write out every single thing word for word. Instead, write down the general idea of what you’re learning. Taking detailed and accurate notes takes a long time, and it’s better to understand a concept rather than memorize every single detail.
Ever notice yourself struggling to understand two or three topics at once? It happens to the best of us.
It’s easy to get distracted while learning something new. Cramming too much information into your brain simultaneously and on separate topics will damage the quality of your studying time. Brains are not built to be crammed full with a ton of information at once; when forced to recall that information, your brain won’t be able to remember it very accurately.
Instead, focus on one single topic at a time. Concentrating on one thing at a time will allow you to understand better and retain the material longer.
Practice makes more practice. That’s the long and short of it. Learning is a lifelong process. If you’re not learning, you’re not growing.
So learn to practice what you’re learning in the course. Practice means doing exercises, quizzing yourself, and reviewing concepts. Don’t forget about your instructors. They’re there for a reason and are a wealth of knowledge, so don’t forget to ask questions!
If you can consistently practice what you’re learning, these activities will help you understand how to apply your newfound knowledge.
When you get to a certain point in your course, you might find it gets easy to get frustrated. You might feel like you’re getting nowhere, making the same mistakes repeatedly, but this is all a part of the learning process. Try talking to someone (or another student) who can help give you the boost you might need. This boost can also be a perspective shift. If you can think of your studies and progress as a positive learning experience, your course experience will go much smoother.
