CanScribe offers two $500 Bowen-Ripley scholarships to individuals interested in taking CanScribe’s online Medical Transcription/Healthcare Documentation Specialist program. To become a Bowen-Ripley Scholarship essay winner, a student must submit a one to two-page essay describing their personal motivation for applying, including background information, how this career choice will impact their life, their plan of action to complete the course, and future aspirations.
CanScribe lost two amazing instructors, Pat Bowen, and Glenda Ripley. These two amazing women exemplified what a Medical Transcriptionist should be, and these scholarships are available in memory of them. Take a look at the entry below to view the 2022 Bowen-Ripley Scholarship Essay Winner, Amanda Hyland-LeDrews’ submission.
My name is Amanda Hyland LeDrew. For the past ten years, I have been a stay-at-home mom. I consider this role to be my most important job ever!
I previously worked in retail as a teenager and in my twenties. I started working in Customer Service at a large pharmaceutical company once I turned thirty. I specifically worked in the eye care division. It was fascinating, challenging, and exciting. It was a dream job for me!
I was a successful Customer Service Agent for several years, then transferred over to the Sales Support Team. I worked directly with the Executive Sales Team, Regional Managers, and the entire North American Sales Force and became an Inside Sales Representative. In my thirteenth year with the company, there was a merger, and my department was downsized out.
During my employment (at the age of thirty-six), I returned to college part-time to complete an Office Administration program. I graduated with honors. I was able to complete this program while working full-time, and it has been one of my greatest accomplishments.
I feel I am the perfect candidate for the Medical Transcription course. I have extensive experience working with doctors, technicians, and patients. I developed vital communication skills, learned medical terminology in the eye care field, and a lifelong love of learning.
During Covid 19, my family (like many other Canadian families) was greatly financially impacted by the pandemic. My husband had to close his consulting business. We were struggling, in danger of losing our home, and on the verge of bankruptcy. I wanted to start working again to contribute to our household income. My dream to enroll and complete the Medical Transcription course will give me the opportunity to help support my family and boost my self-esteem. I am ready to embrace this new beginning.
My action plan will be to devote several hours each day to the course while my son is attending school. My goal is to complete the program before the one-year deadline. I am a dedicated, attentive individual who possesses the strength of self-direction and focus to successfully complete the program with honors.
I have been drawn to this program for several years, as I have a friend who is a successful honors graduate. The timing in the past was not right for me. I believe now is the moment for me to seize this incredible opportunity, and I look forward to becoming another CanScribe Success Story!
