Each year, CanScribe Career College offers a $1,000 Indigenous Scholarship to indigenous individuals who are interested in taking one of our programs. We ask that submissions include your personal motivation for applying, how taking one of our courses will impact your life, and finally, your future aspirations.
If you’re an Indigenous individual and would like to submit a submission for our Indigenous Scholarship, you can learn more on our scholarships page. Students can only take advantage of one scholarship or bursary at a time.
Below you can find the submission of Michelle Kean, winner of our Indigenous Scholarship for 2022.
My name is Michelle Kean, and I am a Red River Métis. I currently work on the beautiful west coast of Vancouver Island as a Licensed Practical Nurse. I would like to acknowledge that I reside in Victoria, B.C. on the traditional ancestral shared territory of the Lkwungen and WSANEC people.
I have been an LPN for the past 12 years. The past 2 years during the pandemic have been the most difficult. Working as a travel nurse, I was designated specifically to the COVID wards at my own personal risk. I endured an increased workload, staff shortages, long hours, deficits in PPE, and ethical and organizational tension. I was left feeling unsupported and completely burnt out. Healthcare as we know it has been forever changed.
My ancestral history is rooted in resilience. We adapt and move forward. It is part of who we are as the Métis. A traumatic workplace event changed my personal view of the world in the blink of an eye. I too am resilient, as I have the ability to recover but am left completely transformed. I have to adapt and re-invent my send of self within my chosen career in the medical field. Change is inevitable. My takeaway lesson was nothing short of Post Traumatic Growth.
Choosing the Healthcare Documentation Specialist training program will have a positive impact on many aspects of my life. Positives are as follows: decreased stress, no commutes, fewer distractions for increased productivity, improved work/life balance, and improved mental and physical health. Most importantly, this new career would provide the flexibility needed to set a schedule that is congruent with my healing journey.
My plan of action to complete this program would include SMART goals. I would use these goals to establish a target date for completion. This would allow me to prioritize, manage my time and attain desired results right through to completion. These SMART goals are a great tool that I have used repeatedly throughout my education and nursing career. These goals have contributed to my success as well as my personal and professional growth.
Life is a state of constant change. Some changes are positive and some are not. My career goals have since shifted. My aspiration is now to build on my previous career and work remotely to achieve a healthier work/life balance.
I am ready and eager for the next challenge in my life. I want to look back on my career and accomplishments with a sense of pride knowing I never gave up!
Respectfully,
Michelle Kean
