Do you hate your job? Well, you’re not alone. A study has shown that around 46% of employees are unhappy at work. What’s more, employees aged 35 and younger are twice as likely to be unhappy at work.
Think about this: if you are to dedicate at least eight hours a day, five days a week to something you aren’t passionate about, then what’s the point?
Probably not. If you’re unhappy in the workplace, you’re more prone to burnout and dissatisfaction in other areas of your life. Solidifying a healthy work-life balance is critical to achieving a happy work life. When you’re happier, you’re likely to be more efficient and produce a higher quality of work. You’re also more likely to live a happier life outside of work.
If you’re unhappy in the workplace, it’s often attributed to a number of factors, including underappreciation, poor management, isolation, and a lack of flexibility.
A survey conducted by human resources firm Robert Half U.K. found that nearly a third of people over 55 said they didn’t feel appreciated by their managers. Feeling underappreciated at work can definitely leave a negative impact on both your professional and personal life. Underappreciation can mean low pay or even just a lack of recognition from your superiors for something you’ve accomplished. Feeling underappreciated or undervalued can make you feel like you’d be happier elsewhere.
Unsurprisingly, the leading cause of unhappiness at work is bad bosses. What makes a bad boss? A common reason is a lack of support or a sense of caring; employees are more likely to be happy at work if their boss shows them respect, trust, appreciation, and support. It probably seems like a no-brainer, but having a bad boss can make you less motivated and more likely to perform poorly on the job.
The social aspect of work makes a huge impact. However, 16% of employees aged 35 and older find it difficult to make friends at work. But if you work from home, you don’t have to worry about forging friendships with colleagues you have nothing in common with. In fact, you’re free to spend more time with family and friends. And we all know that surrounding yourself with good company is key to being happy and productive.
If you’re a parent, you probably realize the value of having a flexible job. Whether it’s driving your kids to and from school, chaperoning a field trip, or even staying home with your sick child, it’s important to have a job that allows flexibility. Without flexibility, it can be difficult to accommodate your children’s needs and can make you unhappy in the workplace. Unfortunately, most jobs don’t offer enough flexibility.
If you’re unhappy in the workplace, you’re not alone. Determine if your unhappiness is worth your paycheque. If not, it’s time to make a change. It’s never too late to start a new career that adds true value to your life.
