Is Career Training Right For You? Take The Free Quiz |
If you’re considering beginning a new career in Medical Transcription/Healthcare Documentation, you’re probably trying to find a school that’s right for you.
You might think about choosing a local school for a number of factors. Your local school may offer affordable tuition rates for in-class lessons, making it quite an appealing choice. We all know that it’s great to “support local”. But when it comes to choosing a school, sometimes local isn’t always the best option.
Although local schools may be more affordable and closer to home, they might not have the accreditation. When it comes to employment in the Medical Transcription/Healthcare Documentation field, you will need formal training from a recognized and reputable institution that’s accredited by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity.
Find out what accreditation means for a program, and the effect it can have on your career below.
Accredited schools are responsible for establishing high education standards. To ensure these schools are operating up to standard, AHDI audits them regularly. Some areas they audit include enrollment numbers, graduate success rates, complaints, financial viability, employment rates, staff training… and much more.
Yes, there are lots of schools that offer courses in Medical Transcription. However, the Association of Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) often does not approve of most schools.
If your school is not accredited you’re likely to have a hard time finding employment upon graduation. The vast majority of MT/HD employers will only hire applicants from accredited institutions.
We commonly see students who have previously studied Medical Transcription/Healthcare Documentation at their local colleges, only to later realize that employers within the Medical Transcription/Healthcare Documentation industry don’t recognize it.
Think about it this way: just because you have taken a law course doesn’t mean you can now become a lawyer. Just because you’ve studied at a reputable school doesn’t mean AHDI recognizes your certificate.
If you plan on applying for financial aid, you’ll need to make sure you are enrolling with an accredited school. If a school is not accredited, most funders will not provide financial aid. Moreover, some employers will not hire someone who graduated from an unaccredited program.
