What a Virtual Assistant Course Teaches You

CanScribe's Virtual Assistant Course covers the administrative, technical, and business skills that employers explicitly requested when the program was developed. The curriculum spans Microsoft Office, bookkeeping basics, project management, social media management, human resources, and text expansion software — producing graduates who can handle the full range of tasks a remote or in-office role requires. This industry-reviewed curriculum was built from employer feedback, which means the skills taught map directly to the job responsibilities graduates take on from day one.

Core Skills the Program Develops

CanScribe's Virtual Assistant Course teaches administrative support skills across two broad categories: office operations and business communications. On the operations side, students learn to organize meetings, produce meeting minutes, maintain contact lists, manage filing systems, and handle basic bookkeeping and accounting tasks. The business communications component covers correspondence, report production, grammar in a professional context, and marketing and event planning basics.

Microsoft Office proficiency

Microsoft Office proficiency runs throughout the program because employers consistently list it as a minimum requirement. Beyond Office, the course introduces text expansion software — a tool that reduces keystrokes for repetitive tasks and directly increases output speed in high-volume administrative roles. Students who arrive without an Office background build it from the ground up; students who already use Office regularly can move through those modules faster.

CanScribe's Virtual Assistant Course also covers social media management, project management skills, career development, human resources, and how to book travel — the full range of services that VA clients most frequently outsource. The program has been reviewed by the Canadian Association of Virtual Assistants (CAVA) and approved by the Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU) of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training, confirming the curriculum meets regulatory and industry standards. Students looking for a more detailed breakdown can review the virtual assistant training course program page for the full curriculum outline.

How Long a Virtual Assistant Program Takes to Finish

CanScribe's Virtual Assistant Course runs for 26 weeks, and students who study approximately 20 to 23 hours per week stay on that timeline. The program is self-paced, so completing it in as little as three months is realistic for students who have prior experience in some subject areas and can put in more hours per week. There is no structural barrier to moving faster — if a student already understands a topic, they can attempt the module quiz, pass it, and advance without sitting through material they already know.

Studying Online Around an Existing Schedule

CanScribe's Virtual Assistant Course is delivered entirely online, which means students set their own daily schedule. The 20 to 23 hour weekly estimate assumes no prior knowledge across all modules; students with bookkeeping experience, Microsoft Office proficiency, or administrative backgrounds typically move through those sections faster and redistribute that time elsewhere.

Optional extensions for students

The 26-week window includes optional extensions for students who need more time — a one-month extension is available for $150, and a three-month extension costs $350. Because CanScribe holds PTIRU designation, students enrolled in approved programs can access provincial student loans. Details on financial assistance options are available on the college's financial aid page, including payment plan structures for students who prefer to spread tuition over three or six months interest-free.

Students receive a Virtual Assistant certificate upon completing the program. The certificate documents formal completion of an online virtual assistant training program that has gone through regulatory and industry review — a distinction that matters when applying to employers or approaching potential clients who evaluate candidates' credentials.

Career Paths Available After Virtual Assistant Training

CanScribe's Virtual Assistant Course prepares graduates for two distinct career paths: remote work as a freelance contractor or independent contractor, and in-office roles as an administrative specialist. The program was built to support both directions, so the skills are transferable across work settings. A graduate can take on VA clients immediately after finishing, apply for in-house administrative positions, or do both simultaneously.

Working as a Freelance or Independent Contractor

The freelance contractor path involves taking on clients directly, setting your own rates, choosing your hours, and managing your own client relationships. Virtual assistants typically work in general administration, social media management, bookkeeping, and marketing support — and the mix of services a VA provides often depends on their niche specialization, with some graduates focusing exclusively on bookkeeping and others building a broader generalist practice.

CanScribe's Virtual Assistant Course graduates have access to employment partners who actively recruit program completers. Virtual Gurus is a Canadian VA company that gives CanScribe graduates preferential consideration in their application process. Admin Slayer, a full-service VA company contracting across Canada, has expressed interest in interviewing program completers for contractor positions to meet growing client demand.

In-Office Administrative Roles

CanScribe's Virtual Assistant Course sets graduates up for mid-level administrative positions immediately after graduation. The transferable skills built in the program — Microsoft Office, project management, bookkeeping, correspondence — apply directly to in-office administrative assistant roles, which means graduates are not limited to remote work. Students who want to evaluate both paths before enrolling can start with the admissions process page, which outlines how to apply and what to expect during enrollment.

Virtual Assistant Demand in Canada and What Graduates Earn

Virtual assistants can work as an employee of a company or as an independent contractor on a freelance basis, and the Canadian market supports both arrangements. Employers hire VAs to handle the same tasks previously done by onsite staff — scheduling, correspondence, bookkeeping, social media — but on a contractor basis that gives both parties more flexibility. Admin Slayer, one of CanScribe's Canadian employment partners, reported an increase in client requests for VA services and specifically sought out program graduates to fill that demand. CanScribe's Virtual Assistant Course was designed to meet exactly the range of skills these employers need.

What Canadian VAs Typically Earn

Payscale estimates the median hourly starting wage for a Canadian virtual assistant is around $20.00 per hour. The range varies based on specialization — a VA handling bookkeeping or marketing analytics typically commands higher rates than one focused on general administrative tasks, and contractors who set rates strategically based on their niche earn toward the upper end of that range. In-office administrative assistant roles in Canada average around $44,000 per year according to Glassdoor, with a range from roughly $30,000 to $57,000 depending on experience. Graduates who move into executive assistant roles can see median salaries around $54,000, with upper ranges reaching $84,000.

CanScribe's Virtual Assistant Course graduates

CanScribe's Virtual Assistant Course graduates receive unlimited resume and cover letter support after finishing the program — a service available two, five, or twenty years after graduation with no time limit. The college also assists graduates with job placement through its network of employment partners. For graduates establishing themselves as independent contractors, CanScribe's employment partner network provides direct connections to companies actively hiring VAs across Canada.

Is Formal Virtual Assistant Training Worth the Cost?

The question of whether a paid virtual assistant course offers more than free alternatives is common among prospective students, and the SERP for "virtual assistant course" includes Reddit threads making the case for self-teaching. Free resources can teach individual skills — YouTube covers basic Microsoft Office, free blogs cover client outreach — but they do not produce a certificate, do not carry regulatory recognition, and do not come with employment partner connections or graduate support structures.

What a Structured Program Provides That Free Training Does Not

CanScribe's Virtual Assistant Course was developed in response to direct requests from employers who needed graduates with a specific and verifiable range of administrative support skills. That origin matters: the curriculum is not a collection of independently assembled modules but a program designed to meet employer expectations. The Canadian Association of Virtual Assistants reviewed the program, and the PTIRU designation means the course meets a regulatory standard that makes graduates eligible for provincial student loans — something no free online course provides.

Virtual assistant certification

Virtual assistant certification from a PTIRU-designated institution signals to employers that a graduate completed a program subject to external auditing and curriculum standards. A candidate who holds a certificate from a reviewed program occupies a different position in a competitive applicant pool than one whose skill set is entirely self-reported. For graduates pursuing the freelance contractor path, the structured coverage of bookkeeping, project management, and social media management means graduates can offer a wider service menu from day one rather than building skills piecemeal through early client work.

Students who want to explore shorter or supplementary skills

Students who want to explore shorter or supplementary skills before committing to the full program can review the micro-course collection, which covers individual topic areas. The full Virtual Assistant Course remains the route to a recognized certificate, employment partner access, and resume and cover letter support that continues for the life of the graduate — but shorter options exist for students who want to assess fit first.
