CanScribe Career College offers two annual scholarships to any military spouse. Entrants submit a one to two page essay describing their personal motivation for applying, including background information, how this career choice will impact their life, their plan of action to complete the course, and future aspirations. Below is the entry from one of our 2021 Military Spouse Scholarship Essay Winners, Amber Smith.
Consistency and reliability are my main motivations for applying to CanScribe. I have been a military spouse for 14 years, I am ex-military myself, I have a six-year-old daughter at home and two dogs so life can be very hectic.
This career would allow me to keep the same job long-term and take care of my family. I plan to complete the course by dedicating time to it daily and making it a priority. I would love to continue working in this career and eventually re-applying to the Army Reserves.
My husband is in the Army and he is away between six and nine months each year. We move bases approximately every two years and that means starting over at each new location. Trying to find a new job is difficult as experience in one province may not be acceptable in the next, as well education is not always equal or recognized.
The fact that I work at each job only a year and a half does not appeal to most employers and I am not able to establish myself in a job or career that is meaningful. CanScribe would allow me to study for a career that I can take with me and that I can feel good about while still being able to take care of my family.
Daycare for before and after school can be tricky to acquire especially with both parents having ever-changing schedules and with the current pandemic school for my daughter is increasingly difficult. This is my fifth base and sixth military move. I have had several jobs since becoming a military spouse.
I have worked for TD bank, I have years of customer service experience, merchandising, I was in the Army, and have done tech support, hotel reservations, as well as working in the School System. Currently, I am a Casual Educational Assistant in Shilo and Brandon Manitoba, I was a Supervisor at Central Quebec School Board for two years at our last posting.
I am a foster for the Brandon Manitoba Humane Society and volunteer at the Community Center Library on base at CFB Shilo where I live. I am looking for a meaningful career that I can feel good about that has steady hours and will allow me to continue some of my volunteer work and possibly continue working as an EA for now. I believe this would be a wonderful opportunity for me.
I plan to fully dedicate myself to the course as it is something I want for myself and my family. I will make sure to set aside time each day to work on the course, go over any areas I need to look over again, and study. In the future, when my daughter is older, I would love to reapply to the Army Reserves while continuing to work in this field.
In conclusion, I love that this would allow me to have consistent work as we get posted all over the country and a great and reliable work/family balance. It would be an incredible asset to my life and huge ease of mind. I am ready and willing to take on this challenge because the reward is being able to work in a career that I feel good about and my daughter can be proud knowing her Mom did not let the trials of Military life defeat her. It is never too late to try something new!
