Being a Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist is an exciting career and provides many benefits to the healthcare industry. A Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist helps to improve the healthcare system by reducing claim denials for patients from insurance companies, helps to decrease physician queries, writes accurate code for better documentation, improves quality patient care, and overall improves communication between all parties. As a Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist, you’ll be playing a critical role for patients, doctors, and the industry as a whole.
Our Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist program requires all students to fulfill one of the following requirements:
1. A minimum three years of experience as a nurse, physician, or other regulated health professional.
2. A minimum three years of experience working as a Health Information Management professional.
3. A minimum three years of experience as a coder with knowledge of medical terminology.
Educational facilities teaching CDI, Health agencies and departments, hospitals, and more.
It stands for Certified Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist. To become a CCDIS, you need to complete the CDIS program in its entirety and you must write and pass the NCE to become certified with CHIMA.
CDISs evaluate patient records, go through records for specificity and proper documentation, input document queries, follow up on previously unanswered questions or delayed answers, and they make sure the place of work gets proper medicare reimbursement, and they contact a patient’s insurance company if necessary. Additionally, they also clear up conflicting data and check codes for accuracy.
Glassdoor says the average pay for a Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist is around $71K per year in Canada, which is about $34 per hour.
This career is for healthcare professionals who have a clinical background and care about capturing and accurately documenting the patient experience.

The course is offered in English in its entirety. To meet your eligibility requirement, you will have to take an English proficiency test during the application process.

Furthermore, CDI Specialists perform detailed chart analysis, act as liaisons and collaborate with coding teams and physicians, and educate others by building training resources and tools to support coding and clinical teams. CDISs prepare written reports and uncover positive and negative patterns in documentation and actively make suggestions for improvement.
CDISs are in demand, and it’s a great up-and-coming career path. The role of a Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist is becoming more critical as Canada moves towards creating higher-quality medical records.
