Is Career Training Right For You? Take The Free Quiz |
CanScribe offers two $500 Bowen-Ripley Scholarship to individuals interested in taking CanScribe’s online Medical Transcription/Healthcare Documentation Specialist training program. Entrants submit a one to two-page essay describing their personal motivation for applying, including background information, how this career choice will impact their life, their plan of action to complete the course, and future aspirations.
CanScribe lost two amazing instructors, Pat Bowen and Glenda Ripley. These two amazing women exemplified what a Medical Transcriptionist should be, and these scholarships are available in memory of them. Below is the entry from one of our 2021 Bowen-Ripley Scholarship Essay Winners, Megan Hicks.
“My name is Megan Hicks, I was born on September 27, 1984, in a small town in the rocky mountains called Grande Cache. I grew up in Grande Cache with my two older brothers and my loving parents. My dad worked at the local sawmill as a heavy-duty mechanic, and my mom worked in our house as a bookkeeper.
Growing up, I never had to worry about anything other than just being a kid. I went to school with kids who had to go home after school and look after their little siblings or start supper because their parents were working. I loved having my Mom working at home. She was always there and very involved in our lives. I have always wanted that for our family.
I met and married my husband Ruben in 2009. We had our first son Corben, in November 2010 and our second son, Brayden, in February 2013. Corben didn’t speak until he was 3 years old, which is quite delayed for a child. When Brayden started preschool, his teachers were convinced there was something “off” about him. He didn’t make friends very easily, and he needed to say and do things in a certain order. When he was in kindergarten, he was diagnosed with Autism.
He now attends a regular grade 3 class and receives occupational therapy outside of school and speech therapy inside of school. When Corben was in grade 3 the teachers, as well as us at home, started seeing some memory problems and frustration around school. When Corben was in grade 4, he was diagnosed with ADHD inattentive.
I am personally motivated to take this because I want to be that stay-at-home mom my Mom was for us. I want to be as involved in my kids’ lives as I possibly can be, my kids need me involved in their lives. Children with Autism need to have things predictable; they don’t do well with changes. For example, me going to work out of the house would be a big change and would likely take months if not years for him to get used to. I am confident that as he gets older it would be an easier change to adapt to.
With this career, I will be able to be that steady constant for my kids and be able to be home for them when they need me, as well as take some stress off my husband. Ruben works very hard to provide for all of us. He works at our local OSB mill as a shift millwright, working long hours of day shifts and night shifts. We enjoy his days off doing things together as a family. With this career, we will also be able to spend more family time days off together.
My sons are 8 and 10 years old and are in full-time school. While they are in school, I plan on going to my local library to work on my course. If I am unable to make it to the library, I have an office set up in my house. In the future, when my kids are grown, I would like to continue on in the medical field and possibly take a unit clerk course and go to work at our brand new hospital, which should be finished this year.
I thank you for your time and consideration and look forward to taking this course and to a future career in this field.”
