I don’t have a unique story or a crazy story. I suppose my story is like so many others. I worked and then I became a mom. The decision to remain home was very important to us and we made it happen. As the children grow up the expenses have increased, trying to make do with what we have in a time when life is just getting more and more expensive.
My husband is a good provider and works hard to make sure that we have a roof over our head and food on our table. Watching him break down when we talk about money is so hard. Those hours he works are just barely covering the basics and the only thing he can think to do is work another job and that takes him away from his family more, an option we just don’t want. If possible, having their father around was extremely important to us.
Our youngest is now closer to 4 than 3 and I get asked all the time, what’s next? At first my answer was stay home and maybe find some time for myself again, since the last 10 years have been about my children; including lack of sleep, being climbed on, snotted on and everything in between. However, I have found as I have come out of the baby and toddler phase a sense of wandering and restlessness. A need to feel a level of accomplishment that I do not find cleaning up the kitchen endlessly or doing the millionth load of laundry.
I absolutely adore being a mother. But one thing that I don’t adore is saying no because of money. I want to say no because it’s a choice, not because we just cannot afford to do it.
I have been on this journey to figure out what is next now for about 2 years. Everything is now falling into place to make a dream a reality. Having the ability to work from home is unbelievable. My husband’s job is not easy to work around as his job is dictated by snow 8 months out of the year. But I also absolutely love volunteering at the school and going on field trips. I love the ability to let the children hang out in their pajamas until 11am over Christmas holidays. These are all the little things that really matter to me. On a larger level I am dreaming again, and it feels so good.
We would really like to own our own house in 5 years. I would like to have all our debt paid off and then I would like to be able to help out my in-laws instead of them helping us. I would love the ability to give back. Giving is my husband’s love language, and it really affects him when he can’t live out that love.
Going back to school gives me a fair level of anxiety to be honest. It has been about 12 years since I have even written a paper. I am excited to feel like I can do something else to help and not compromise on what is important either. Having my youngest in preschool is going to be a huge asset to finishing this course, as I can devote all my afternoons to school. I also encouraged my sister to do the course, so we are going to be doing it together. The stubborn and competitive redhead in me likes the competition, because who brings out competition more than a sibling, right!
I have a goal of completing the course by December 1st, but the latest goal is Christmas. I have also spent the last month organizing an office space and an area for the children to work as well in desks while I am working. They can draw, read, or even play quietly while I accomplish this next task towards a better future. Setting an early precedence about the nature of the office and what it is used for.
I am so beyond excited to start, with a hint of nerves that always seem to come when you start something new. I am grateful that my husband is on board and supportive and I look forward to showing my children what hard work can accomplish as well. I will have to learn to say no a little bit more to extra activities, but I am in a great place with amazing support systems. Lou has made this experience of applying and getting started unforgettable and I feel extremely supported by CanScribe as well, which is a huge reason for choosing this course.
One thing I want to add is that life never turns out the way we plan but I truly believe that life is what you make it to be. I finally became uncomfortable enough with where our lives are that I ended up taking a leap despite being afraid of doing the next hard thing.
The hard of tomorrow is outweighing the hard of today. I truly understand that there are going to be hard days and there are going to be fun days, but I know that looking backwards is just not an option because I have no desire to go back. So here is to financial freedom and time flexibility! Here is to purchasing our first house and taking our first family vacation on a plane! Here is to the future!
