Summer Study Tips

As the school year comes to an end, the weather is getting nice, and the swimming pool is calling. We at CanScribe know how hard it is to focus on your training during this time of year. Here are some helpful tips previous students have used to stay on track with their course timeline:

  1. Set a reasonable weekly schedule and stick to it.

Keep the word reasonable in mind; make sure to get your work done but give yourself enough time to enjoy the day. Avoid setting unachievable goals with consideration to your family’s schedule.

  1. If the family is constantly calling for your attention, work on the course after they go to bed or very early in the morning to get the day started off right.

This is paramount, especially with younger children; make sure that you have time for your kids, yourself and the course. Maintaining a good balance between the three will allow for equilibrium at home.

  1. Hang a “do not disturb” sign on your office door.

Set some boundaries and guidelines for yourself and your family. When the sign is up, it’s your turn to work.  Non-emergencies can wait for you to finish.

  1. Let your family and friends know when you are free again so they know when they can speak to you.

If you have a set schedule every week of when you want to work on the course, make sure everyone is informed so you can be contacted at a time convenient for both parties.

  1. Set weekly goals and reward yourself when they have been reached. It’s summer – catch that ice cream truck!

Finished a chapter? Get a high grade on a test? Go ahead and take a break, go catch some of that beautiful summer weather.

  1. Network with other students that are a positive influence on your study schedule.

Create relationships just as you would in a classroom with other students in the course. These people can help motivate you and help you when you need that extra helping hand. If you think you are alone in the struggle, just reach out! The team at CanScribe is here to help and so are other students.

  1. Turn your phone off during study time.

Technology can be a huge distraction for everyone in today’s world. Cell phones, tablets and other technologies can tempt you to “just check one little thing” but that little thing turns into three hours of searching the web and finding cat videos.

  1. Use a consistent place to study.

Just like any job you create habits in your work space. These habits allow you to get settled in and focused on the task at hand.

  1. Try to study at the same time every day.

Having a set schedule allows your body to adjust and allows it to be ready every day for work. This also allows friends and family to get used to your schedule.

  1. Review regularly.

Reviewing your work is important to success. Whether it be homework, a test or a dictation, it is always a great idea to check your work. We all make mistakes, but we can usually catch these mistakes with a little bit of extra time spent reviewing our work.
