There is a philosophy that if one makes little changes on an ongoing basis, always improves productivity and effectiveness while reducing waste, success will be achieved in whatever they chose. It’s a soft, gradual method, and the concept can be applied to any aspect of your life.
For example, you are always telling yourself that you need to add a specific item to your word expander, or you want to create “nesting” additions to your word expander, but keep putting it off. Start with the nesting, build upon an entry that is already there, duplicate the entry and make changes to the word, change its tense, change it from the noun to the verb, etc.
Then you may want to start adding phrases to your word expander. Instead of using three different word expander entries to comprise a specific sentence, make the whole sentence one entry! When you take the time to look something up in Stedman’s or your favorite drug reference add it to the expander. In fact, some word expander programs allow you to highlight the entry and add it directly to your expander. What a time saver! You will not have to repeat the time it took to look it up in the first place, making things easier on yourself in the future. These small changes daily will help immensely with your productivity.
After a week or so you can start to apply another method, all the while building upon what you have begun. Now, figure out your best resources. Add them to your favorites on your browser. You will now have helpful websites at your fingertips. Orthopedic device manufacturers? Cardiology terms? The most excellent drug/pharmaceutical site you have found? And what about all those emails from the instructors filled with suggestions?
Perhaps it is a good time to actually read the information that was sent to you. You can then choose to add these suggestions to your daily repertoire or choose to delete them from your email. Now we have another task: cleaning up your email inbox.
By adding and improving little tasks day-by-day, you are making slow, continuous improvements to your organizational scheme and your productivity.
Through the creation of these systems and processes and continuously tweaking them, you will get the best results and reduce waste. To summarize with a few other added tips:
Set yourself up to succeed by making things easy on yourself. As you make additions to your word expander, as you organize your favorites, all of this information will take the pressure off of you to remember because it is right at your disposal. Give yourself a pat on the back as you work on these small, steady tasks. This is a great accomplishment and its benefits will be reflected in your production and your quality; not to mention how you feel about yourself and your abilities once the results become apparent.
