Another long weekend is here! This Monday, February 20th is Family Day for Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan. It’s also a long weekend for Manitoba, Nova Scotia and P.E.I. who will be recognizing Louis Riel Day, Heritage Day and Islander Day, respectively.
Family Day is all about celebrating the importance of families. It’s a day for letting go of the distractions of daily life and reconnecting with loved ones.
Whether you’re celebrating Family Day or another holiday this long weekend, it’s the perfect opportunity to get out and do something fun! But with the unforgiving winter we Canadians seem to be experiencing this year, you may find yourself stuck indoors. Not sure what to do with the kids? We’ve got you covered. Here are a few ideas on how you and your family can make the most of the weather this long weekend:
Build a snowman
You may be getting pretty sick and tired of that white stuff on the ground outside, but it’ll soon be gone. Take advantage of the snow while it’s still here and build a snowman!
See a movie at the theatre
Why not buy tickets to a matinee? There are a ton of great movies out right now. You can check out your local cinema’s showtimes here.
Hit the slopes
If you live close to a mountain, you can spend the day out on the slopes. Whether you ski, snowboard or simply love a good toboggan ride, the mountains offer tons of fun. Some mountains even offer Family Day discounts on lift tickets and equipment rentals.
Go ice skating
Celebrate Family Day like a true Canadian. Grab a hot chocolate from Tim Hortons, lace up your skates and hit your local ice rink.
Get your hands dirty and have some fun in the kitchen! Might we suggest baking these white chocolate chip nutella cookies?
Turn your living room into a fort
We recommend this one even if you don’t have children. Don’t forget to share your fort photos with us!
Visit a local attraction
Many local attractions offer free admission for children on Family Day. Pack up the kids and head on down to your local art gallery, museum or zoo for some educational fun!
Your city or town may be hosting Family Day events as well; check out your local newspapers to find some near you. You can browse a list of free Family Day events throughout Canada here.
